System Overload Lyrics

Music and Lyrics by Zach Sweeney

Electric lines are glowing.  It’s not the moonlight. Gotta keep on moving.  No time to wonder why.

In my head my logic circuits starting to fry.  Can you see the purple haze coming from my eyes?

Is it insanity? Or is it systems overload?

Gotta keep on moving, all night and all day.  When you see me coming, get out of my way.

This Austintateous attitude is hurting my head.  Somewhere between Nietzsche and the Grateful Dead.

Is it insanity?  Or is it systems overload?

Get me up….

Boot me up…

Start me up.

I’m ready to fly.

Everybody’s knowin’ things that ain’t real. The virtual world is growing. Our souls it will steal.

Focused on what’s distant while what’s here we ignore. See the devils knocking on heaven’s door.

Is it reality?  Or is it systems overload?

Systems Overload

I wrote this in college when I was jamming with my friend’s band Johnny Law. I liked to say it had an “Austintatious” attitude, which is hurting my head – still one of my favorite lines! It’s about running here and there and the quickening pace of life due to technology. Tech was becoming big in the 80s and everyone was getting their first computers. We were all running around to embrace the latest tech and short circuiting with everything. I inserted some of my favorite bands in the lyrics, including the Grateful Dead and Hendrix (“purple haze”).  I wrote the last verse 30 years later about the virtual world growing, stealing our souls and taking away our humanity. That was inspired by seeing so many kids with eyes glued to their screens. We’re focused on what’s in the distance while ignoring what’s right in front of us. It’s my way of urging people to plug into actual reality. Aidan plays guitar here too.
